Air Covered Spandex Yarn (ACY) with POY (Partially Oriented Yarn)​ as the outer sheath represents a distinct category within elastic composite yarns. Unlike conventional ACY using DTY (textured yarn), POY-based ACY utilizes undrawn or partially drawn filament - typically Polyester POY or Nylon POY - which is fed together with a pre-drafted spandex core through a high-pressure air-jet nozzle. The compressed air creates intermittent entanglement points between the spandex and the POY filaments, forming a soft, untwisted, yet cohesive yarn bundle.

The use of POY instead of DTY fundamentally changes the yarn's character. POY filaments have not undergone texturing, so they retain a smoother surface, lower crimp, and higher residual elongation. When air-covered with spandex, the resulting ACY exhibits:

• A much softer, silkier hand feel​ compared to DTY-covered ACY, because POY lacks the bulk and crimp of textured yarn.
• Lower initial modulus​ - the yarn stretches more easily under light tension, making it ideal for lightweight, low-power garments.
• Better dye penetration​ in certain applications, as POY accepts dye differently than fully drawn or textured yarns.
• Reduced pilling tendency​ in finished fabrics, since the POY filaments lie flatter and experience less surface abrasion.

When the POY covering is Polyester, the yarn offers excellent cost efficiency, good heat resistance, and compatibility with disperse dyes. When the POY is Nylon (Polyamide), the yarn gains superior abrasion resistance, vibrant color yield with acid dyes, and a naturally slick, luxurious feel preferred for intimate apparel and premium sportswear.

Important processing notes for POY-based ACY:

• Tension control is more critical​ during knitting/weaving because POY has higher elongation and lower tenacity than DTY.
• Heat-setting conditions​ may need adjustment, as POY shrinks differently than fully drawn yarns.
• Finished fabric hand​ is noticeably smoother and less "scroopy" than DTY-covered equivalents, making POY-ACY the preferred choice for next-to-skin applications.
