Covered Spandex Yarn is a type of elastic composite yarn produced by using a bare spandex (elastane/Lycra) filament as the core, which is pre-drafted and then helically wrapped with non-elastic covering yarns-such as nylon (polyamide), polyester, cotton, viscose, or wool-to fully enclose the elastic core. It is mainly classified into Single Covered Yarn (SCY), where one outer yarn wraps the spandex core in one direction, and Double Covered Yarn (DCY), where two layers are wrapped in opposite directions for better coverage and balanced elasticity. Based on the production process, it can also be an Air Covered Yarn (ACY), made with compressed air to create a softer, more flexible hand feel, or a mechanically covered yarn with a firmer, crisper fabric appearance.

The key characteristics of covered spandex yarn include excellent elongation (typically 300%–600%) with high elastic recovery, good dimensional stability, improved abrasion resistance, and protection of the spandex core from UV light, chlorine, and friction. The choice of covering fiber imparts additional properties-nylon provides strength and smoothness for hosiery; cotton offers breathability and comfort for underwear; polyester delivers durability for denim and woven fabrics.

Typical applications span circular and warp knitted elastic fabrics, stretch denim, socks and pantyhose, lingerie and seamless garments, sportswear, elastic waistbands, webbings, medical bandages, and narrow elastic tapes. It is one of the most widely used elastomeric yarns in the modern textile industry, valued for combining the high stretch of spandex with the aesthetic and functional qualities of conventional fibers.
